Spirometry

We offer Lung Function Testing in the form of Spirometry.

Spirometry may be recommended if you have symptoms (such as shortness of breath, cough, or wheeze), if you have lung disease such as asthma or COPD, or if you have a history of smoking.

What is spirometry?

Spirometry is a common test used to assess how well your lungs work by measuring how much air you can inhale, how much you can exhale and how quickly you can exhale.  It can measure how effectively air can be moved in and out of the lungs.

Spirometry is used as an aid to diagnose of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other conditions that affect breathing.

Why do we perform spirometry?

To aid diagnosis:

  • Checking for reversibility post-bronchodilator
  • Differential diagnosis between asthma and COPD

To assess and/or monitor:

  • Respiratory symptoms such as cough or shortness of breath
  • Disease severity
  • If a medicine is working
  • Intervention outcomes e.g. pre- and post- pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Occupational health impacts

Please book an appointment with your GP to discuss whether spirometry would be helpful for you.
