What is MyMedicare?
MyMedicare is a voluntary patient registration model that was introduced by the Australian government in October 2023. It aims to formalise the relationship between patients, their general practice, general practitioner (GP) and primary care teams. MyMedicare was introduced as part of an ongoing commitment to strengthening Medicare for all Australians. MyMedicare provides extra Medicare benefits
Am I eligible to register?
You’re eligible to register in MyMedicare if you have:
- a Medicare Card or Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Veteran Card, and
- two face-to-face visits recorded at the practice within the last 24 months.
Parents/guardians and children can be registered at the same practice if one of them is eligible and registered. A parent/guardian must register a child under 14 years and provide consent on their behalf. Young people aged 14 to 17 years can register and provide consent without a parent/guardian.
Do I need to register?
No, registration is voluntary. You can choose not to register, but you may miss out on extra Medicare benefits that you could be receiving.
Does it cost anything to register?
MyMedicare registration is free and optional.
How will it benefit me?
The goal of MyMedicare is to strengthen the relationship you have with your preferred doctor and medical centre. Attending the same clinic and seeing the same GPs for your medical appointments will allow your chosen doctor to provide you with better ongoing care. You can still attend other clinics, however, you will receive some extra benefits at your chosen clinic.
Since November 2023, all registered people have access to longer MBS-funded telehealth consultations with GPs at the practice they are registered with. This means you and your GP can have more in-depth conversations (over 20 minutes) about your health. Medicare will provide a larger rebate for these longer telehealth consults to help make it more affordable for you, but only at your registered practice.
Additional MyMedicare benefits were introduced mid 2024 relating to aged care incentives.
In November 2024, additional MyMedicare benefits are anticipated in relation to Chronic Disease Management.
What do I need to know?
- Registration is voluntary and can be changed if your circumstances change in the future.
- Patients can only register at one practice, but some people may be eligible to choose between multiple practices, depending on where they have received medical care within the last 24 months.
- Neither the practice nor the practitioner will receive payment for people registering.
- At GHFP Nurture and Glebe Hill Family Practice, our commitment to providing you with access to the highest quality care remains unwavering. We do not intend to make any changes to the way you access care at GHFP Nurture or Glebe Hill Family Practice, or to the practitioners’ existing private billing policy.
- MyMedicare registration will not prevent you from accessing care from other practices and healthcare providers. The longer MBS telehealth items, the new aged care incentive, and from November 2024 Chronic Disease Management items will be linked to your registered practice.
When will registrations open and close?
All patients can register for MyMedicare from 1 October 2023. There is no close date or deadline to register.
Can I register with more than one clinic?
You cannot register with more than one practice. The goal of MyMedicare is to help strengthen the relationship you have with your preferred practice and doctor. People should choose to register with their preferred practitioner at the practice they intend to continue receiving their care at. If you change your mind, you can also unregister at any time.
