RSV Vaccination
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that can cause severe respiratory illnesses such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Symptoms include runny nose, cough, fever, wheeze or difficulty breathing. It’s often a mild illness, but it can sometimes be more serious and lead to hospitalisation, even in otherwise healthy kids and adults.
RSV Vaccination for Pregnant Women
RSV vaccination in pregnancy is the best way to protect your newborn baby against RSV. RSV vaccine is recommended and funded from 3rd February 2025 for women who are between 28 and 36 weeks pregnant. We expect to have the vaccine on-site at both our practices some time in February, and once it’s arrived we’ll be contacting eligible pregnant patients to offer an appointment for RSV vaccination. Don’t call us yet, we’ll call you!
RSV Vaccination for People Over 60 Years
Private RSV vaccine is currently available for people aged over 60 years. Make an appointment with your GP to discuss the vaccine. The vaccine can be purchased at a pharmacy with a GP prescription.
RSV Immunisation Product for Infants & Children
Babies up to 8 months old, and children up to 2 years old are recommended to have a RSV immunisation product if:
- the mother did not receive an RSV vaccine during pregnancy, or
- they were born within 2 weeks after the mother receiving an RSV vaccine, or
- they or their mother have a condition or circumstance that increases their risk of severe RSV disease.
The RSV immunisation product that is suitable for children is not currently available, and we expect that it will be available and funded by our State Gov in April 2025. We’ll share more information closer to the time.
